Deirdre O’ Neill is a part time lecturer and a filmmaker.

Her new book Film as a Radical Pedagogic Tool explores the way in which a radical pedagogy of film grounded in the experiences, class location and everyday realities of the working class can provide a starting point for a critical engagement with and a materialist understanding of how society is organised.

She is the co-coordinator of the Inside Film Project

She has co- directed (with Mike Wayne) three films Listen to Venezuela and Condition of the Working Class Their latest film The Acting Class is about the lack of working class actors it won the best feature film award the International Lbaour Film Festival in 2017Her film The Foodbank film won the runner up prize for best dhort documentatry at The Respect Belfast Human Rights Festival in 2017 

She gained a PhD form the University of Ulster it was a theory practice PhD comprising of a film and a written dissertation -originating  from Inside Film a project that helps prisoners and people on probation make their own films,her research explores  the need for working class people to represent themselves and challenge mainstream stereotypes and assumptions about them.It gave prisoners and ex-prisoners the technical skills necessary to make their own films and tell their own stories in order to counter the ways they have been misrepresented. It explores how film and television function as key means by which socio-economically marginalized groups are classified according to hegemonic norms, as well as the ways such groups can undermine these misrepresentations through their use of the media.
