Dr Lucia Corsini
Lecturer in Product Design Engineering

Dr Lucia Corsini is a Lecturer in Product Design Engineering and has over ten years’ experience working on design and engineering projects in the public, private and Third Sector. Lucia explores how design and systems thinking can help to tackle complex sustainability challenges (e.g. Circular Economy, SDGs). She is also interested in how digital technologies can enable more sustainable production and consumption. Lucia is a member of the Sustainable PLasticS researcH group (SPLaSH), Design for Sustainability Research Group and the Cambridge Creative Circular Plastics Centre (CirPlas).

Lucia has held research positions at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, where she was awarded an EPSRC DTP Fellowship at the Department of Engineering. Lucia holds an MEng, MA (Cantab) and EPSRC-funded PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge. Her PhD was awarded a Doctoral Prize from the University of Cambridge’s School of Technology, awarded to only two PhD researchers for the most outstanding research.

Lucia has been awarded research development and public engagement funds for her work on reusable packaging by Brunel University, and was previously the co-investigator on a CirPlas grant at the University of Cambridge focused on the circularity of polyethylene (PET) in resource-limited settings. Lucia has also previously received two awards from the Cambridge-Africa Fund (totalling £42k), which focused on how digital technologies can boost resilience to crisis and enhance long-term sustainability. Related to this work, she was part of a team that received a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Impact and Engagement (2020). Lucia has received notable awards for her research from the Winton Programme for the Physics of Sustainability, Smart Villages, the Cambridge Malaysian Education and Development Trust and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Initiative.

Lucia has published papers in prestigious international journals such as Sustainability, Production Planning & Control, and Technology in Society and is the guest editor of a special issue on Design and Sustainability in Sustainability. Lucia has also contributed to national and international conferences, workshops and roundtables on sustainability, including as an invited speaker at the All-Party Parliamentary Sustainable Resources Group, the Cambridge Forum for Circular Economy Approaches to Eliminate Plastic Waste and Cambridge Climate Change and Sustainability Forum.

Additionally, Lucia advises on policy issues for governments and international organisations, and she has written reports and articles for the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, the World Economic Forum, and the UK Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy. She is a consultant for IfM Engage at the University of Cambridge where she supports the development of Wellcome Trust-funded Adaptive Molecular Diagnostics for Low and Middle Income Countries. Before joining academia Lucia gained industry experience working at Siemens, Atkins, Jaguar Land Rover, Simprints and Accenture.
