Matthew is Lecturer in Design Communication at the Department of Design. He is module leader for Graphic Communication and Design Communication, with further responsibilities for online learning and undergraduate curriculum development. He is interested in giving structure and clarity to the communication and understanding of complicated information through information design and typography.

Matthew has a BA in Graphic Communication and an MA in Information Design. His PhD, from the department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading, investigated cross-platform documents, combining insights from document design with multimodal linguistics. Following his PhD he worked at the Centre for Information Design Research (CIDR) at Reading. This work included contributions to interdisciplinary research projects investigating the understanding of uncertainty in the communication of meteorological forecasts and the development and testing of methods for communicating soil moisture information to farmers in northern Ghana (ongoing).
