Dr Wenbo Duan has been working on the mathematical modelling of sound wave propagation in pipeline systems with the aim of detecting discontinuities since 2006. He was responsible for developing analytic models to study the coupling between the sound wave travelling in the fluid and the elastic wave travelling in the wall of the pipeline when he was a PhD student in the University of Manchester. 

After that, he moved to Brunel University, and developed new stand alone finite element software to implement fast and efficient mathematical models. A hybrid finite element method was used which combines modal expansion solutions in the uniform sections of the duct with the conventional finite element solutions in the discontinuity regions of the duct. 

He is currently working on developing of a hybrid finite element software which is able to model ultrasonic guided wave propagation in long range axisymmetric (rods, pipes etc.) or non-axisymmetric (plates, railway tracks etc.) objects.
