Grain spoilage reduction using analytics and sensors
The GrainCare project applies modern low cost sensing technologies and advance analytics to the problem of post-harvest spoilage, by looking at the drying and storage process. India produces about 263.3 million tons of food grains per year. Annual post production losses are 15 million tons of food grains. The GrainCare project applies modern low cost sensing technologies and advance analytics to this problem in order to reduce post-harvest spoilage. This project will deliver on all the objectives of an R&I Bridge: expertise and knowledge on advanced IOT sensing technology and machine learning will be transferred from UK to India, and deep understanding of the technical and commercial complexities of the Indian agricultural market will be transferred from India to UK. The GrainCare project addresses an area of both economic and humanitarian importance, opening significant economic development opportunities.
The GrainCare business opportunity is to provide a solution that reduces energy consumption and reduces waste and increases yield thereby increasing profits. The combination of low cost hardware and state of the art cloud computing means this solution can be provided at a fraction of the potential savings. The majority of spoilage occurs in storage phase, and this spoilage is largely attributable to not correctly drying the grain beforehand. This is a win-win-win solution as the sustainability opportunities of reduced energy consumption, and social opportunities of reduced spoilage are perfectly aligned with the economic incentives of the grain producers.
