Summary

This project investigates phenomena related to the distribution of inertial response that may significantly impact future power system operation.

Project description

Before analysing in detail such phenomena and possible mitigation measures, the project intends to start by understanding the physics behind the possible effects of the distribution of inertia. The final objective of the project is to understand if local phenomenon or the altered behaviour of neighbours can impact the stability of the grid and then trigger the need for “local” inertia or other measures.

The research project will develop modelling tools, techniques and expertise with specific regard to the effect of distribution of inertia in the power grid as well as considering related factors such as grid topology, penetration of renewable energy sources, and overall system security
