Research and development of a Cost-Effective High Efficiency SI Gasoline engine
Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals for an industry funded full time PhD studentship with skills, knowledge and/or experience in internal combustion engines. This new research project is focused on the research and development of a cost-effective high efficiency spark ignition gasoline engine in collaboration with Tata Motors European Technical Centre (TMETC). Spark ignition gasolines will remain the dominant powertrain unit either on its own or in the hybrid engine and electrical vehicles for the next few decades, because of its ability to produce zero-impact emissions, as well as their high performance and low cost. Compared to the CI diesel engines, there is much room for improvement in the thermal efficiency and fuel economy of a spark ignition gasoline engine. The project will explore and develop technology and methods for improving the mixture formation and combustion and reducing mechanical losses. It will involve setting up the engine and its control on a test bed. The engine performance, fuel economy and emissions will be measured and analysed with the new technologies. The PhD project will involve close collaboration with the engineers from TMETC and present at regular progress meetings.
Applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to take the initiative to produce solutions to problems and work effectively with the engineers and technicians.
The studentship will be for a period of 3 years and the successful applicant from the UK/EU will receive an annual stipend of £18,000 (tax free) plus payment of their full time Home/EU tuition fees. For the successful overseas applicant from countries outside UK/EU, the studentship will cover the Overseas Student Fees and an annual stipend of £6,000 for 3 years.
Applicants will have or expected to receive a first degree at 2:1 (65%) or above in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering, or other related engineering areas. Previous experience with engine testing will be desirable.
