Smart stone construction technology
Current civil engineering projects, such as housing or infrastructure are primarily led by construction costs and speed. For assessing the whole-life cost and environmental impact, concrete, steel and timber are the main alternatives considered.
During the history stone buildings and infrastructure have proved to be highly sustainable, resilient, have long life expectancy and low maintenance costs. Their life-cycle costs and environmental impact are over 50% lower than other materials. Stone is however not considered for mainstream construction at the present due to its lack of development over the past 100 years.
The vision for the project is to revive stone construction. ‘Digital Stone’ will combine digital technology with the well-established benefits of stone and offer the most advanced and sustainable construction form for the industry.
The project is looking to assess the environmental potentials for ‘smart stone’, develop digital solutions and automated construction methods for housing and infrastructure. The exact topic for the PhD can be adjusted to the background and interest of the applicant and may be linked to (but not limited to) design, material testing, sensor technology, sustainability, life cycle assessment, automation, optimisation, construction management. Research is expected to be carried out in collaboration with the industry and generate new products and services.

Meet the Supervisor(s)
- Katherine Cashell is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Brunel University.
Dr Cashell is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) and a Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE) and Engineers Ireland (MIEI). She is engaged in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and research in steel and composite structures. Her principal research interests lie in the area of structural testing, numerical modelling and the development of efficient design guidance for steel and composite structures. In particular, she has developed an expertise in the analysis of structural response during extreme loading conditions, such as a fire. She is also actively engaged in researching the use of novel materials such as stainless steel and high strength steel in building structures.
Dr Cashell is actively involved in the Institution of Structural Engineers, and is currently serving as a member of the Council. She is the past Chair of the Great Britain region of Engineers Ireland.
