A study of large amplitude vibration in HAWT blades

Non-prismatic composite beams of standard airfoil cross sections are used in Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine blades to produce green energy. The blades are subjected to static and dynamic service loads during their lifetime as well as accidental low probability extreme loads. As such, understanding the effect of the shape of the cross section on static and dynamic performance is beneficial to industry.

The project deals with semi-analytical and numerical study of dynamic response in composite beams with a particular through thickness architecture (lay-up) subjected to low and high amplitude pulse loads of low and high durations. The cross section of the typical beam varies along the length and is selected to be a combination of the standard NREL S818, S825 and S826 airfoils twisted at a predefined angle to maximise lift. All regimes of response viz. impulsive, dynamic and quasi-static are ought to be considered. In all cases the monolithic counterpart is also analysed as a benchmark.

The aim of the project is thus to establish a relationship between the features that determine the pulse load uniquely and the response outputs.
