The aim of our Biomedical Genetics and Tissue Engineering MSc is to create qualified biomedical engineers who can help in the design, development, operation and research of complex medical devices for the modern biomedical and healthcare industry.
Gaining a deeper insight into genetics and tissue engineering, you will also cover biomechanics and biomaterials, and will learn about genomic technologies and molecular mechanisms.
You’ll be in demand in the area of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and the characterisation of tissue.
Teaching is delivered by enthusiastic world-leading biomedical research experts, and enhanced by clinical professionals who are part of our extensive network of industry and hospital collaborative partners. With our strong industry links, some projects are provided by hospital consultants and are based on solving practical biomedical problems and challenges.
Researchers at Brunel are working in a range of research areas, including tissue engineering, cell culture, microfluidics, and electrospinning techniques for developing novel materials. Their up-to-date knowledge will feed directly into your learning.
You will have access to fully equipped laboratories, with excellent biomedical engineering research facilities. In the computer lab, you’ll have the opportunity to develop hands-on skills using modern computer software to solve problems relevant to biomedical issues.

The taught modules are delivered over two terms. During the second term you’ll also work on your dissertation part-time. This will be followed by four months of full-time effort. Your dissertation project will involve an advanced piece of investigation and research relevant to biomedical engineering.

Entry criteria 2019/20
- A 2:2 (or above) UK Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in an engineering, appropriate science or technology subject.
- Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.
Entry to this programme requires all students who are not nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) and have temporary immigration permission to remain in the UK to obtain an ATAS certificate. If you are made an offer to join this course and you are not an EEA national, you will be required to obtain an ATAS certificate as a condition of your offer.

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list. This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.
Should you wish to take a pre-sessional English course to improve your English prior to starting your degree course, you must sit the test at an approved SELT provider for the same reason.

Teaching and learning
Our biomedical master’s degrees are delivered by passionate world-leading biomedical research academics, and enhanced by clinical professionals who are part of our extensive network of industry and hospital collaborative partners.
Study will combine lectures, seminars, tutorials, supervised laboratory sessions, self-study, and individual and group project work. There will also be hospital and industrial visits.

Assessment and feedback
Your work will be assessed through written coursework including technical project reports, design appraisal, essays, research assignments, presentations, individual and group projects, written exams, and your dissertation.

UK/EU students can opt to pay in six equal monthly instalments: the first instalment is payable on enrolment and the remaining five by Direct Debit or credit/debit card.
Overseas students can opt to pay in two instalments: 60% on enrolment, and 40% in January for students who commence their course in September (or the remaining 40% in March for selected courses that start in January).
