Flu – Information for Students

Tuesday 30 October 2012

As winter progresses, there are an increasing number of people being diagnosed with seasonal flu and H1N1 (swine) flu. In the majority of cases flu remains a mild illness and most people recover after a few days. At present, the number of confirmed cases is in line with the seasonal norm, but should there be an outbreak of flu on campus, plans have been put in place to manage the infection (in line with government recommendations) as far as possible.

If you have flu-like symptoms and you are concerned that either you may have swine flu or your symtoms are getting worse, make sure you do the following:

  • If you are staying in Residences inform them of your illness by sending an email to illnessinhalls@brunel.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0)1895 265499.
  • If you are diagnosed as having swine flu, make sure you inform a friend.

How to minimize the spread of infection and stay healthy

  • Always cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing, and wash your
    hands afterwards
  • Bin your tissue after use
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water; alcohol-based gels are also
    effective
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Regularly clean shared hard surfaces like door handles and keyboards using
    appropriate cleaning materials
