What I wish I'd known when I was applying to University

Posted: August 30 2022

There can be a lot to process when you first start university. Whether you are in college and are prepared to apply to university in a year’s time or you are a first-year student, the application process for university can be challenging. There is a lot to manage, particularly when it comes to making decisions. Therefore, every student will have a unique experience with the procedure.

In this blog, I’d like to share what I wish I’d known when I was applying to university. Being a university student is likely to be difficult since you are far from your family and suddenly introduced into adult life. At university, you have a lot to think about, you have to make mature choices, and most of the time, you will be required to make sure that you are going in the proper direction. There will also be times when you will feel homesick and yearn to be back with your family. Self-doubt begins to sneak in as you start having second thoughts about your choice of university and course.

What I wish I’d known when I was applying to university was the importance of attending an open day at the university that was my firm choice. It is essential to understand the course you are applying to. For instance, I could have opted to study Law just because I watched Legally Blonde! Nonetheless, reality can be very different. Therefore, it is better to understand what to expect from the course of your choice.

You can feel intimidated and overburdened by the application process. The secret is to consume everything in manageable portions. It would have been extremely helpful if I had known that back then. I could have set some attainable, healthy goals for myself to accomplish during that period, especially with regard to anxiety and stepping outside of my comfort zone. It is important to open up to someone when you feel overburdened by the application process and making a firm choice. It might seem overwhelming when you are preparing your essay, supplements, and other components for university applications but, in light of all of this, it is crucial to remain organised and meet all deadlines.

Be authentic! Make sure your application showcases both your personality and your academic accomplishments. Universities like students who stand out from the crowd in areas other than their academics. Let your personality shine through in your essay and application, whether it be a skill you have attained or a passion you wish to pursue. Remember, even if you do not get into the university of your choice, there are always plenty of opportunities and countless alternatives for universities. Throughout this process of applying to a university, never compare yourself to others because everyone has different future objectives, and you should only concentrate on your own.
