After taking a year out of education and looking for a uni course that would fit my interests, I began to lose hope that there was a course that suited me. I considered Politics, International Relations, Environmental Sciences, Social Policy and so much more. I wanted to become an agent for meaningful change, and Global Challenges was exactly the program to set me on my way.
This trans-disciplinary course explores many of today's wicked problems, such as climate change, sustainable development, migration, terrorism, inequality and poverty. Instead of using the conventional model of siloed learning, we learn through a multitude of disciplines (economics, sociology, ecology, politics, anthropology, and so much more) giving us a holistic perspective of the world.
I chose the Planetary Health pathway, which focuses on the interconnectedness of human health and the health of our planet. You could also choose to specialise in ‘Social Cohesion’, ‘Global Innovation’ or ‘Security’. Whichever you chose, all Global Challenges students study the core elements together, sharing specialised expertise that widen perspectives.
One of my favourite things about the course is how empowering it is. One module in particular- ‘Leadership for Sustainability’ allows students to create and run their own projects, campaigns or interventions on the theme of sustainability. This has led to some amazing initiatives, many of which are still active on the Brunel campus and beyond. It enables students to see their work in action, giving value to their ideas.
I’m coming up to my graduation now, and my three years have flashed by. Global Challenges has equipped me with all the skills and knowledge that are most sought after by employers. I feel confident that my university experience will be directly applicable to working life. Employers have shown a real enthusiasm for the way graduates have learnt on the course. Although I'm unsure which career path I wish to pursue, I feel there are so many options ahead of me - perhaps something in climate justice campaigning, environmental policy, or community engagement.
Global Challenges is gaining recognition for its innovative approach, and I’m proud that it has recently won 1st place in the 2022 National Student Survey for Combined Studies and the 'Next Generation Learning & Skills' category of the 2022 Green Gown Awards for UK & Ireland.
The course is hard-hitting but it will leave you feeling hopeful, inspired and empowered to tackle issues that matter to you. Being such a small cohort, we’ve created a truly supportive community of passionate change-makers.
