MARA University of Technology - MSc
Which country do you currently live in?
Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
I got a job with Aberystwyth University (Mauritius Branch Campus) as a Lecturer while I was still at Brunel, two months before I submitted my PhD thesis. After almost two years working in Mauritius, I got an offer from Sheffield Hallam University for a permanent position. I am now a Lecturer in Computer Science at the university and actively doing research in machine learning.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
Prepare materials for teaching, deliver lectures, marking, research work and department meetings.
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
My experience of studying at Brunel helped me with the unique research quality. Brunel lecturers have a lot of interesting PhD research areas that make their students marketable.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
A research university and a great location - i.e. near to an international airport.
What is your best memory of studying here?
I enjoyed my PhD journey at Brunel. My former PhD supervisors are great - they are the experts in the area and really helpful. I am still in contact with them for research work. I wish I could do a PhD again with my former PhD supervisors. I also like the free seminars and classes that I could attend such as research writing, english social class, third language class and many more.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
Enjoy the life as students at Brunel. There are a lot of programmes you can join - don’t miss the chance to attend useful classes / clinics / seminars at Brunel that are offered for free.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
First of all, equip yourself with knowledge such as presentation, communication, and critical thinking skills. Build a good network in your field. Finally, be proud to be Brunel alumni!
