During my degree I’ve learned about the development of cancer down to the cellular level, and increased my knowledge on all the different proteins and stages involved from mutation to cancer formation, invasion and progression. I’ve found it fascinating.

With the help of Brunel University London, I managed to get a summer internship placement at the Royal Brompton Hospital. I worked in the cardiovascular laboratory which helped me develop my lab skills, as I learned a number of new processes including the DNA extraction from blood samples, DNA Amplification through Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR), and the separation of DNA (gel electrophoresis) in order to determine the presence of a specific mutation. I am now more confident working on my own and very much enjoyed this invaluable experience.

I really look forward to learning new techniques and using new machines, such as staining bacteria and distinguishing between the gram-positive and gram-negative strains according to the colour of the stain they hold.

I also really enjoy Brunel as I get to socialise with other students as well as the lecturers.
