Matthew Caws, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the American alternative rock band Nada Surf joins author and Brunel lecturer Helen Cullen

Matthew Caws is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the American alternative rock band Nada Surf, but he is also a member of the indie rock duo Minor Alps, alongside Juliana Hatfield. Founded in 1992, Nada Surf has only grown more creative and resourceful as time has marched on, with each consecutive release notable for Caws' ongoing growth as a songwriter. After a smash hit with their single Popular, which became a huge summer anthem in the 1990s, the band ultimately chose a more indie route for their subsequent releases. 2022 saw the band celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album, Let Go.

Now recording their tenth studio album, Matthew joins Helen in the wake of their latest European tour to reflect on his songwriting craft in the wake of nine glorious studio albums and countless projects including composing for the cult TV show, One Tree Hill and recording a live album Peaceful Ghosts with Vienna's ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra and Potsdam's renowned Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg. With a huge global following, Matthew Caws is one of the most celebrated and beloved songwriters of his generation - this is a unique opportunity for all creative writers to learn from his process.
