All academics involved in teaching Mechanical Engineering Design are invited to attend. Companies involved in Engineering design are also invited to take part in this summer school.

The Summer School also provides informal opportunities for discussion of topics related to the interests of the participants.

The event is an excellent opportunity for networking and many research collaborations have evolved from discussions during the course.

Problems may be of practical nature for a specific product or academic teaching approach for students.

The course begins on Monday morning (21/08/2023) and there will be a welcome address by the Dean of the college including refreshments.

If there is an interest, a guided tour can be organised for one of the evenings.

Topics - The lectures will start with an introduction of basic Mechanical Engineering design based on machine elements and will make a transition to the advanced design based on the theory of the Quality Chains.

Practical examples will be based on two stage gearboxes. The practical sessions will allow participants to apply methods of guaranteeing the spec of the product and to gain skills in calculating accuracy needed for the parts.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Introduction and terminology of the design
  • Theory of the Quality Chains
  • Methods of achieving the specification parameters
  • Full interchangeability
  • Partial interchangeability
  • Method of selection
  • Methods of compensation
  • Dimensioning of the parts
  • Practical sessions

A provisional schedule will be handed out to all participants and they will also receive hard copies of all lecture materials as well as a copy of the manufacturing tables and tolerancing ISO standard.

Venue -  Lectures and practical work will be at Brunel University London, Kingston Lane, Uxbridge, London, UB8 3PH The lecture room is BANN 019g. See campus map here

Travel To Brunel University - Please see link here for instructions on how to get to Brunel by different modes of transport.

Fees - Registration fee is just £500.
The fee includes refreshments, lecture notes, manufacturing tables and ISO standard. Accommodation and meals are not included in the course fees and will be charged separately.
