Think Global – Act Local’ is an old slogan, but one that still applies to address climate change. Climate is a global feature, and climate change affects different regions in different ways. Being located at the margins of a major ocean, the UK’s climate is sensitive to changes in the atmosphere and ocean in ways that are not fully predictable and may be unexpected.

The consequences of climate change and associated hazards can be addressed through adaptation if we have sufficient awareness of what those consequences might be and how they might affect the places where we live, work and relax.

Risks arising from river flooding and extreme weather events provide good examples of how local action can help to reduce risks today and in future, how individual choices can make things worse (or better), and how community engagement can have multiple benefits.
