THE MUSIC AND POETRY OF ANDEAN POTATOES

Music and Llamas at the Potato Harvest, Taquile Island, Peru by John Dyer (2)

This interdisciplinary and collaborative event brings together Andean flavours from Bolivia and Peru to explore the cultural and social significance of potatoes in the daily lives of highland communities.

Our two specialists, Professor Olivia Angé from the Laboratoire d'Anthropologie des Mondes Contemporains at Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, and Professor Henry Stobart from the Department of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London, UK will present talks on their respective ethnographic research in the Andean Cordillera.

They will peel back the layers of the potato’s socio-cultural meaning within a rich stew of music, cultural practices, affection, respeto and agriculture. Adding to the spice of the day, there will be live performances of Andean music and dance, in which all attendees are warmly invited to participate!
