The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024 have been released this morning, and Brunel University London ranks in the top 15% of universities overall.

The world rankings highlight the sustainability performance of over 1400 higher education institutions worldwide by measuring their environmental impact, social impact and governance.

The environmental impact category recognises the efforts universities are making to transform the planet for the better, whether that is through their teaching or research, and the social impact category recognises universities’ work to transform society for the better through education, inclusion and community outreach.

Good governance is seen as vital if countries are to pursue and meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the governance category refers to the leadership within an institution.

Brunel’s strongest performance was in social impact, placing in the top 100 in both the equality and the health and wellbeing sub-categories.

The rankings – compiled by global higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) – recognise that universities are in a unique position to educate, inspire and influence positive change at the local, national and global levels through their teaching, engagement and shared expertise.

Brunel is committed to sustainability, and the recognition is warmly received. Prof Trevor Hoey, Brunel’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for International and Sustainability, said: “Sustainability lies at the core of Brunel’s mission and strategy, and we are delighted to see our work on social impact, environmental impact and governance recognised in this ranking.

“Our ambition is to provide leadership through our actions, to educate our students, and to work with our partners worldwide to contribute to a more sustainable world.

“We look forward to continuing our work in this area and to collaborating with all of our partners to deliver mutual benefit.”

The recognition follows the high commendation from the International Green Gown Awards, which was awarded to the university’s flagship Global Challenges degree - for its continued success and focus on sustainability.
