Brunel University of London’s Dr Gabriella Spinelli has joined a new national expert group set up to fast-track safe, effective use of artificial intelligence across the NHS.

The UK National Commission on the Regulation of AI in Healthcare brings together world leaders in technology, medicine and regulation to create clear rules for AI in health settings.

Dr Spinelli, who leads the RADIANT-CERSI centre for digital health and AI safety, will steer the group’s work on real-world testing and regulatory guidance.

“This Commission marks an important step towards ensuring AI in healthcare is safe, trusted and effective in real-world settings,” said Dr Spinelli, Reader in Healthcare Design and Innovation at the Brunel Design School, College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences. “It will contribute to better patient outcomes, improved productivity across the NHS, and growth in the UK’s software and AI as medical devices sector.”

The group will advise the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on a new framework for AI in healthcare, due to be published next year.

It will also review AI tools currently stuck in regulatory limbo—such as voice assistants that take notes for doctors—and help accelerate patient access to innovation.

“This is about making sure the NHS can benefit from cutting-edge AI safely and quickly,” said MHRA Director Lawrence Tallon, introducing the Commission.

The Commission supports the government’s ambition to build an NHS fit for the future and boost the UK’s position as a global leader in AI regulation.

Chaired by NHS consultant Professor Alastair Denniston and co-chaired by Patient Safety Commissioner Professor Henrietta Hughes, the group includes leading voices from DeepMind, Cambridge, and top healthcare firms in the UK and US.

It will meet monthly and publish key recommendations in 2026, with early guidance expected on fast-moving technologies.
