'I am going to design' – Brunel launches new design school

A newly-formed design school has arrived at Brunel University London’s Uxbridge campus.

Brunel Design is joining forces with Brunel Digital to create the Brunel Design School – a new institute that will approach design from the standpoint of engineering, drawing upon the mindset and legacy of its namesake, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Brunel – already one of the top design education providers within the UK university sector – hopes the new design school will stand above other UK institutions by approaching design from the perspective of engineering rather than art. The university’s strong technological background means that Brunel Design School will not only produce graduates that are exceptionally creative design thinkers and conceptual problem solvers, but who also possess a pure understanding of “how things work”.

The school's industry-standard design studios, workshops and labs will allow students to see real-world projects through from early concept through to fully-fledged working prototypes.

Dr Vanja Garaj, Head of Design at Brunel, commented: “The formation of the Brunel Design School and its focus on digital will enable Brunel to respond to the increasing demand for design talent that is currently presented by the continuous expansion of the digital economy and the consequent unprecedented growth of the design industry both in the UK and globally.”

The school, consisting of physical and digital design pathways, will significantly expand design education at Brunel – from traditional industrial and product design aimed at the manufacturing sector, into a range of digital design areas, such as digital product design, digital service design, user experience design, motion graphics and visual effects.

With nearly 1000 students already, and 100 full-time and part-time staff working across 12 undergraduate, postgraduate-taught and postgraduate-research programmes, Brunel Design School aims to become an international leader in the digital design education over the coming years.

“Creative thinkers and capable makers – we hope more of you will be joining us at Brunel Design School soon!” said Dr Garaj.
