Brunel Medical School has appointed its Founding Dean, with Professor Naomi Low-Beer taking up the role in September 2020.
Prof Low-Beer will provide academic and professional leadership of the School, shaping and leading the development of Brunel’s undergraduate medical programme, with the first intake of students planned for September 2021.
She brings to the School over 30 years of experience in clinical practice, research, education and leadership – most recently as Vice-Dean of Education and Professor of Medical Education at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine) in Singapore, a partnership between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
Since LKCMedicine’s inception in 2010, Prof Low-Beer has been responsible for leading the design, development and delivery of the School’s undergraduate medical programme; overseeing the education and training of three successive student cohorts; and leading its programme of medical education research. Her work helped LKCMedicine gain international recognition for its innovative, technology-enabled approach to team-based learning, anatomy education and learning space design, combined with a strong focus on student support and patient-centred care.
Prior to her relocation to Singapore, Prof Low-Beer was Consultant Gynaecologist at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, a role that she combined with a Senior Lecturer position in Medical Education at Imperial College. During her practice at Chelsea and Westminster, Prof Low-Beer had a long-standing interest in, and commitment to, the improvement of clinical care for Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups. She was responsible for leading service improvements for women with HIV and for developing new models of multidisciplinary, integrated care for women with female genital mutilation (FGM) – work which resulted in two national awards by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity.
Prof Low-Beer has published on the clinical care of pregnant women with HIV, management of FGM, and most recently on medical education research.
