Mathematics and Anxiety: Links and Connections

Funder: British Academy
Duration: March 2016 - September 2017

Given the recent announcement that all 11 year-olds in the UK will be tested on their times tables, the finding that approximately one in three children have mathematics anxiety (MA) has significant implications for society as these children are likely to avoid future careers associated with mathematics. Research in MA is wide-ranging and methodologically varied and requires rigorous evaluation and synthesis to advance understanding. This study will develop a taxonomy for MA , conducting a comprehensive integrative review of the literature on MA to set the ground for further advanced studies in both the theory and practice of learning and teaching in mathematics. The ongoing synthesis will be posted through a dedicated website and Twitter feed during the course of the work and the final outcomes will be disseminated through a robust plan to bring the theoretical and professional import of this work to a wide audience comprising teachers at all levels, educationalists, and policy makers.
