Miss Samantha McCormack
Principal Technical Specialist (Clinical Simulation)

Summary

Sam joined the university in early 2022 as a Technical Specialist – Clinical Simulation, and ended the year as a Principal Technical Specialist. In 2023 Sam took on the additional role of Department Director Simulation and Skills devlopment.

Sam is an accomplished and high achieving professional with over 18 years’ experience of working in education, primarily in simulation based education. Previous to her current role Sam worked as a Technical Manager leading a team of technicians in the Psychology, Healthcare Simulation and Human Performance areas across the campuses at Buckinghamshire New University.

Sam has an MSc in Medical and Healthcare Simulation; is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; a professional member of the Institute of Science and Technology; and a Chartered Scientist with The Science Council.  Sam is also a National Executive Committee member of the professional body the Association of Simulated Practice in Healthcare, the first technician to hold this post, and leads on all things technician. 

Sam is passionate about the use of innovative teaching techniques to enhance student learning.  Another of her passions is Moulage*.  As a trained casualty Make Up Artist, Sam is able to put her skills into practice to add another layer of realism to the simulations, to fully immerse the students in their sessions.

Sam also holds Individual Accreditation Status with ASPiH 

As a former winner in the innovation category, Sam was delighted to have been asked to be a judge at this years Student Nursing Times Awards

Sam completed the Aurora Leadership programme for women, and in July 2022 graduated from the Herschel progamme for women in technical leadership.

Sam is a Designated Safeguarding office.

Responsibility

Leadership and Strategy Development: Provide influential leadership for the Department Simulation and Skills’ team.Collaborate with Division Leads, simulation leads, and technical teams to develop and incorporate innovative and evidence-based simulation activities within the Department of Health Sciences.

Achievement of KPIs and Quality Assurance: Ensure the achievement of the Department’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to simulation and skills’ development provision, and foster innovation in simulation and skills’ development

Collaboration and Partnership: Collaborate with other Departments in the College to enhance the quality and standards of educational opportunities and student experience related to simulation and skills’ development.

 Oversight and Monitoring: Ensure effective ongoing monitoring of the quality and standards of educational simulation and skills provision within the Department, aligning with university policies and regulatory requirements.

 Staff and Departmental Development: to ensure the delivery of effective and pedagogically sound clinical simulation.

 Committee Membership and Compliance: Serve as a member of the Departmental Management Board, College Education Committee, and other key committees or networks.

 Engagement with Simulation Networks and Pedagogy: Demonstrate engagement with and contributions to local and/or national/international simulation and skills’ development networks and pedagogy. Contribute to the development of Brunel’s reputation for innovative education and scholarship through involvement in simulation networks.

These responsibilities encompass leadership, strategic development, quality assurance, collaboration, oversight, staff and departmental development, committee participation, and engagement with simulation networks and pedagogy across both roles.
