World rankings rise for Brunel in research and citations

The recently released Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 indicate Brunel University London has made a marked year-on-year improvement in its world-class research and citations.

Brunel’s citations improved by almost 10% globally in this year's Times Higher Education rankings, taking us to 458th in the world out of 1,396 universities. This places Brunel within the top third globally for citations.

Citations are references made to a piece of academic work; they symbolise how other academics use and build on published research and are one way of measuring intellectual clout. So, this year’s rankings prove that Brunel researchers are producing ever more impactful work.

The university also secured 422nd in the world for research, which includes measures of research income, productivity and reputation. This is a 1% increase on last year’s results and a 5.9% upsurge on the 2018 rankings, a clear sign of steady growth.

Professor Geoff Rodgers, Vice Provost for Research at Brunel, said:

“The University is glad the work we have put into research is being reflected in our improved global rankings. It is an example of our promise to continually create accessible and impactful research.”

The rankings are based on the world’s largest invitation-only opinion survey of published academics who identify which universities they believe are the best for research and teaching in their field.

Though Brunel has improved hugely in its overall global and national rankings, its research and citation efforts deserve broad recognition.
