Brunel Fellowship Academy

Short-term fellowships available for Summer 2024 – Future Digital Healthcare Innovation

Revolutionising the health and social care landscape through intelligent, effective and agile digital interventions

The Brunel Fellowship Academy will be running for the second consecutive year, and we are seeking to attract around 20 fellows for a fixed term from Monday 3 June to Friday 6 September 2024.

The closing date for applications is Friday 27 October 2023.

Undertake research alongside Brunel University London academics as one of our IKB fellows to boost your career and support us to help people around the world access digitally-enabled, good-quality, affordable and personalised health and social care.

The successful fellows will:

  • begin or continue high-quality collaboration with Brunel academics
  • boost your publications and grant applications
  • raise your profile and expand your network
  • broaden your experience of collaborative and interdisciplinary research.

As an IKB fellow (standing for Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famed engineer we're named after) you'll have an intensive period of research collaboration with our academics, who have expertise in many areas of health and social care sciences, digital technologies, AI, simulation, health economics and user-centred communities. You will have access to research facilities including an AI health lab, a rehab VR lab and multimodal sensors.

Digital health research will be key to delivering a global healthcare system that can enhance health outcomes and provide global citizens with reliable and equitable access to digital health and social care – in line with the WHO’s Global Strategy on Digital Health and with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being.

We are offering strategic, short-term fellowships, open to UK and overseas academic and to staff from the NHS, government departments, not-for-profit organisations, industry and business, and open to all levels of seniority. Your research could be in one or more of these areas – or other complementary topics:

  • digital technologies for health and social care planning and provision
  • health economics
  • medical sensory data acquisition, fusion and synthetic generation
  • health AI – prediction and explainability
  • modelling and simulation
  • medical imaging
  • VR/AR/MR for rehabilitation
  • e-health and remote care
  • health and social care provision in the Metaverse.

In addition to the joint research programme agreed as part of the formal application process to the Fellowship Academy programme, an IKB fellow may be expected to:

  • give an open/public lecture and 1–2 research seminars
  • submit 1–2 journal papers during or at the end of the fellowship
  • contribute to the delivery of 1–2 Brunel Research Interdisciplinary Masterclasses (BRIMs)
  • contribute to the Brunel Interdisciplinary Lab (BRIL) activities alongside Brunel researchers with a view of generating new high-potential interdisciplinary ideas that will be internally funded and supported to develop into credible interdisciplinary external grant applications
  • work with academics in the relevant Research Institutes, Centres and Groups to formulate ideas for research grant applications, and work towards the preparation of one (or more, depending on the scope of the joint research plan) grant application to UKRI/EPSRC, EU or other international funding body.

It is expected that IKB fellows will produce an end-of-fellowship report outlining the activities carried out, the deliverables made and plans for any follow-up activities with their Brunel hosts (such as publications and grant applications).

On-campus accommodation and a per diem allowance will be provided to successful applicants.
