Lisbon conference on tackling sexual violence in universities

Dr Pam Alldred, Brunel University's Reader in Education & Youth Studies, was in Lisbon, Portugal, in December last year, presenting to the Associação de Mulheres Contra a Violência about her recommendations from the USVreact project on responding to sexual harassment and violence at universities and from her research and training for teachers on sex and relationship education in secondary schools.

The conference focused on eliminating sexual violence in schools and universities and Brunel’s contribution was about university and Students’ Union actions on this. Maria Valada, Vice-President of UBS for CHLS presented on the UBS activities to tackle gender-related violence and explained the differences between UK and Portugese Students’ Associations.

The Portugese Office of Equality and Citizenship, and a representative of the Portugese Ministry for Education made presentations, and since Sports and Youth sectors are governed together in Portugal and there is real determination to tackle gender violence and discrimination.  Watch this space!
