IAA FAQs

The following Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) have been prepared for an internal and external audience.

What’s the idea?

The key idea behind the £60m EPSRC investment in UK universities is to help the most pioneering scientists and engineers create successful businesses from their research, improve industrial collaboration and foster greater entrepreneurship.

What is the background of the investment?

The funding comes as a result of a recent EPSRC review of its schemes to support impact activities in universities, particularly where opportunities arise during and after an awarded grant. The aim of the investment is to enable the EPSRC to better understand how to maximise its portfolio and give universities the resources to “narrow the gap” in terms of exploitation.

What does Brunel University aim to do with the IAA?

In successfully securing the IAA award, the core aim of the University is to promote and accelerate the impact of EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) funded research targeted at the automotive sector.

The University will use the IAA to help support our scientists and engineers to:

• accelerate the impact of EPSRC funded research targeted at the automotive sector
• deliver greater collaboration with the automotive supply chain
• bridge the gap between the lab and the marketplace
• support Brunel academics to engage more effectively with industry

What will the IAA fund?

The types of activities that the IAA will fund are: academic and industry secondments; readiness activities; engagement and impact training.

Will the IAA fund non-automotive research?

Not in the initial delivery phase. The flexible award will enable and enhance the activities by which the University can accelerate and maximise the impact of EPSRC funded research, initially within the automotive sector, before being more widely extended.

Will the IAA fund my research project?

IAA funding is available to enable the development of automotive research.
