Courses
ETCbrunel provides short training courses for postgraduate students, staff members and external delegates. Our courses in Scanning Electron Microscopy are endorsed by the Institute of Physics. See Training Courses below.
ETCbrunel is an active research centre and a number of doctoral (EngD and PhD) and research masters students benefit from the facilities and expertise of the staff. See more information on our research pages.
The Centre also provides teaching for various masters courses for Brunel University and international partners, we are also in the process of developing a new MSc course “Nanomaterials Processing” in association with the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing.
See Postgraduate Courses below for more details of MSc courses and current research vacancies, including Isambard Scholarships.
Training Courses
In addition to providing teaching for postgraduate courses, ETCbrunel run a number of short training courses in the use of surface and materials analysis for a diverse range of applications.
The Centre’s Scanning Electron Microscopy courses, endorsed by the Institute of Physics for continuing professional development (CPD), give delegates theoretical and practical knowledge of scanning electron microscopy (SEM); including imaging techniques, high resolution SEM, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Courses make use of both standard scanning electron microscopes and the ETCbrunel’s state-of-the-art variable-pressure, field-effect SEM. A combination of lectures, demonstrations and practicals explore the theory, practice and application of these powerful analytical tools.
These courses run in one-day and three-day guises: the one-day course is popular with commercial and industrial clients, and provides an overview of the techniques and information obtainable, including in failure analysis. The three-day course is a must for researchers across many scientific disciplines who wish to obtain the best quality data available from these exciting techniques.
Because of its emphasis on practical skills, the number of delegates will be limited to 12 per course so early booking is recommended. However, these small sizes mean we are able to tailor our courses to the delegates’ specific requirements - recent and upcoming courses have included a specific focus on SEM applications to biology or metallurgical samples.
