Ultrasonic fractional purification of recycled Al alloys

Applications are invited from excellent candidates for a PhD studentship in the Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST).

BCAST is a work-renowned research centre focusing on solidification related research with a state-of-the art experimental facilities and expertise for both solidification processing and materials characterization. BCAST is the base of Future Manufacturing Hub in Liquid Metal Engineering and Advanced Metal Casting Centre. The on-going research at BCAST covers a wide range of fundamental studies, technological developments and industrial applications of light alloys.

We would like the student to start in October 2016

  • Requirements: Candidates should hold a minimum of 2.1 BSc Hons or MSc Degree in a Materials Science, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Physics or Chemistry.
  • Eligibility: The studentship is only available for UK and EU citizens, or UK residents (who have legally stayed in the UK, not for the purpose of full education, for more than 3 years prior to the start of the grant).
  • Scholarship: The studentship is co-sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and Jaguar-Land Rover and provides both full university tuition fee and bursary of up to £26,000 per annum (tax free) for 3.5 years.
  • Deadline: 31st July
The project is about the development of an efficient purification technology of recycled aluminium alloys and should meet three main challenges:
  • The first is a better understanding and the related ability to establish control of fractional solidification using dedicated experiments, thermodynamic modelling and heat/mass transfer simulations.
  • The second is to understand the mechanisms of ultrasonic processing in the fractional solidification through smaller scale experiments.
  • The third is to design and test a prototype and demonstrate the feasibility of the approach in application to the scrap of different origin and composition.
