Applying to university can be a very big step for the majority of people. Choosing the right course, the right university, and being at a place you feel comfortable are all factors that need to be considered when applying. Here are some dos and don’ts when applying to university.

Dos:

1.) Always follow your passion

This is extremely important when picking the right course and the right university you want to go to. Pick a subject or career path that truly interests you and you have a passion for. This will make your time at university more fun because you will be doing something that you truly enjoy and love.

2.) Research universities and courses

The more knowledge and insight you have about a particular degree and university, the better prepared you will be in making the correct decisions for your future. Universities can vary in their course structure and the type of teaching that they provide, so it is very important to read the course specification to pick the right option.

3.) Draft personal statements early!

For many subjects, a personal statement can be crucial and is one of the first things that will be reviewed when applying to university. Make sure you draft your personal statements early. This is a very essential document, and you must ensure that this is your best piece of work. Plus, don’t forget to check spelling and grammar!

4.) Look into other incentives the university provides such as scholarships and grants

This can be additional funding that can assist you during the time you are at university. Here is a link to Brunel University London’s scholarship and bursaries page.

Don’ts:

1.) Don’t be afraid

Follow your heart when you’re making decisions about your future. As this is such a crucial point of many people's lives, it can be easy to feel scared and under pressure. Be confident in yourself that you will make the right decision!

2.) Don’t base your decisions solely on other people's experiences

People have many different experiences at universities. However, this may not be the same experience you will have. Always have a positive outlook and be excited for the new chapter of your life.
