I’m happy that I was brave enough to take a chance to create a platform where I can turn an idea into reality – I’d encourage any other brave souls out there with an idea to take the leap too.

Founder and director of Mimica Crowned MIT Technology Review's Inventor of the Year for fresh and sustainable take on smart food packaging.

Her award-winning Mimica Touch food expiry label was designed to provide a more accurate method of determining whether food is still edible, by using gelatine which breaks down at the same rate as the food inside the package. Once the food is no longer safe to eat, the user will be able to feel bumps on the label.
Originally devised as part of her final year project, to help the visually impaired, Solveiga has since found that her design could revolutionise food labelling for all.
Now Solveiga’s company, Mimica, has linked up with the UK’s largest dairy business, Arla. Her product has undergone a serious makeover to make a more market-ready version. The new Mimica Touch label is now split, with one side that stays smooth for comparison plus the active side that changes from smooth to bumpy when the food really goes off.
Her definition of success has expanded since she started at Brunel. “I’m happy that I was brave enough to take a chance to create a platform where I can turn an idea into reality – I’d encourage any other brave souls out there with an idea to take the leap too. There is so much ingenuity to be gained by looking at a challenge in a different way.”
