On Wednesday 12th November, the UK Government’s Open Innovation Team (OIT) will come to campus to deliver a policy masterclass. This training is linked to Brunel’s partnership with the OIT – a cross-government unit that works with academics to generate analysis and ideas for policy.
This half-day training session gets you up to speed on the basics of UK National government and policymaking, and how you can get involved. The training is delivered by a team of civil servants who give pragmatic, practical advice and real-life examples from their policy work.
Have you ever wondered how your research might be relevant to policy making or how to get your research seen by relevant government decision makers? Or how evidence is used in policymaking? Understanding this is key to achieving policy impact as a researcher, or in any job seeking to influence policy.
Who is this suitable for: Researchers who are new to working with government or policy impact, especially those who are keen to engage with policy, but are not sure how to begin. Any staff member involved in engaging with policy makers or supporting researchers with this engagement who wish to better understand policy making processes and mechanisms to get involved. Any member of Brunel staff can register for a place.
What does it cover:
- An introduction to the basics of government and parliament
- How policy is made, and how researchers can get involved
- How to build your networks to influence policy
- How to communicate effectively with policymakers
