As AI becomes increasingly embedded within public services, Dr Fotios Spyridonis recommends that accessibility should be recognised as a core principle of AI governance.
This policy brief was produced in the context of the UK government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, which aims to accelerate AI adoption across public services to improve productivity and service delivery. Although public bodies have legal responsibilities to make their services accessible to all, there is little guidance on how to ensure that AI-enabled services remain accessible and inclusive.
Based on research showing that AI-enabled accessibility is most effective when it incorporates contextual human knowledge and recognises diverse user needs, Dr Fotios Spyrridonis' recommendations in this Policy Brief are:
- Recognise accessibility as a core principle of AI governance
- Update accessibility guidance for AI-enabled public services
- Promote human-informed AI
- Develop standards for evaluating AI-enabled accessibility
- Invest in interdisciplinary research to better understand how AI-enabled accessibility performs across diverse populations and public-sector contexts
