At a time of rapidly evolving demands on the electricity system in Great Britain, Dr Ahmed F Zobaa recommends using hosting capacity methodologies to improve renewable integration, improve operational resilience and inform strategic investment decisions.
This policy brief was produced in the context of the electricity system in Great Britain being reshaped by renewable deployment, electrification, digitalisation and Clean Power 2030, whilst connection delays and regional congestion pose risks to Net Zero delivery, economic growth and energy security.
Based on Dr Zobaa’s research into hosting capacity assessments and evolving demands on distribution networks, in this policy brief he recommends to:
- Develop a national framework for advanced Hosting Capacity assessment;
- Integrate Hosting Capacity methodologies within NESO connections reform processes;
- Align Hosting Capacity frameworks with Regional Energy Strategic Planning and transitional RESP processes;
- Position Hosting Capacity assessment as a strategic source of operational evidence for future UK electricity system planning.
