The UK government plans to implement a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland starting 1 October 2027, which will make producers responsible for collecting and recycling single-use beverage bottles to reduce litter and boost recycling rates.

Dr Eleni Iacovidou draws on a global analysis of DRS implementations to provide valuable guidance for effective implementation in the UK. Based on this analysis, Dr Eleni Iacovidou recommends that an effective DRS system should:

  • Set clear objectives and indicators to track performance,
  • Provide comprehensive stakeholder guidance, and
  • Ensure effective communication and accountability to drive public engagement
