Report on Findings from a Comparison of AI-Assisted and Conventional Jury Trials through Mock Trials

Dr Asress Gikay (Brunel University of London) and Dr Eoin Guilfoyne (now at University of Bristol) report on their pilot study that evaluated the potential of the AI Court Evidence System (AiCES), an AI-powered evidence presentation platform developed by BGP Global Services, to improve the efficiency of jury trials, reduce delays in trial, and enhance access to justice.

AiCES combines Speech-to-Text, Text-to-Speech, and Large Language Model (LLM) technologies to automate the presentation of documentary, audio, and video evidence through voice commands. By enabling rapid retrieval and presentation of evidence without the need for a dedicated human operator, the system aims to streamline courtroom proceedings, reduce duration of jury trials as well as the associated costs, and ultimately contribute to addressing court backlogs and improving access to justice. 

The findings from the mock trials in this pilot study provide encouraging but preliminary evidence of the potential of AI-assisted evidence presentation. AiCES demonstrated that it could retrieve and present evidential material extremely rapidly and offered useful functionality for presenting multimedia evidence. However, challenges remained regarding the reliability and consistency with which the system could operate in a courtroom environment.

This report concludes that if these challenges can be successfully addressed, more efficient evidence presentation could, over time, contribute to shorter hearings, more effective use of court resources, associated cost savings and, ultimately, wider efforts to reduce delays within the criminal courts and improve access to justice.
