POSTnote Research Briefing: Policy implications of artificial intelligence (AI)

"There is no dedicated AI legislation in the UK. Existing legislation restricts how AI can be used in practice, such as in relation to data protection, equality and human rights, and intellectual property," we read in the latest POSTnote, covering the topic of policy implications of artificial intelligence.

The publication includes contributions from Dr Elena Abrusci (Brunel Law School) and Dr Hayleigh Bosher (Brunel Law School).

The key issues analysed in the briefing are:

  • AI is rapidly evolving and increasingly integrated into everyday applications and decision-making.
  • The UK lacks dedicated AI legislation, with existing laws covering data protection, equality, human rights, and intellectual property.
  • In March 2023, the UK adopted a 'pro-innovation' AI regulatory approach, using existing laws and regulators. This includes cross-sectoral principles like safety and transparency, applicable across the UK.
  • Legislation has been introduced for automated vehicles and data protection.
  • Additional legislative measures, like mandatory impact assessments and bans on certain AI uses, are suggested. Concerns exist over regulators' capacity to manage AI effectively.
