Colleagues and students from the College of Health and Life Sciences (CHLS) support the growth of wheelchair basketball.
Following hot on the wheels of our Brunel Bulls adult wheelchair basketball team, our campus Sports Hall now plays host to the newly formed children’s team, also called Brunel Bulls - thanks to the hard work of colleagues and students in CHLS.
Occupational Therapy lecturer Dr Mellissa Prunty and Physiotherapy lecturer Dr Meriel Norris identified a need in the West London area for a children’s wheelchair basketball club. They set up a partnership with therapists from Hillingdon Child Development Centre, part of the Brunel Partners Academic Centre for Health Sciences. Players are recruited through the partnership but also from outreach with local schools and on campus.
Dr Prunty continues:
“We welcome all children with physical disabilities and their siblings to come along and play as it is a great source of physical activity and a lot of fun. We have some great students from Brunel Volunteers who work with the children each week to enhance their participation. These students stem from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, public health, sports science and sports psychology and are a great asset to the club."
There are opportunities for current students to volunteer with the children and adult teams.
