British Schools

With assistance from the BFSS, especially financial help for buildings, thousands of British schools were established throughout the country, hundreds in London alone. In many places the newly established British school was the first school the community had ever had. Locations for British Schools ranged from Cornwall to Scotland, from inner-city slum areas to the Woburn Estate of the Duke of Bedford, from rural villages to the mines of South Wales and factories of Manchester.

The Archives holds copies of the list of British Schools produced by the BFSS in 1897. Here is a transcript of that 1897 list. It is arranged by county (NB county boundaries and names are contemporary to 1897). Please note that the 1897 list is not infallible – we are aware of British Schools that definitely existed which do not appear on the list.
