Biography

Corporal Cecil Adler Beverley was born in Copely Yorkshire and attended Borough Road College from 1904-1907. Whilst at the college he competed in both rugby and cricket, and graduated with Intermediate Arts. He enlisted for war service on 8 December 1914 at Tramway Road, Liverpool. On recruitment Adler was measured as 5’10” tall with a 36” chest. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was then attached to Nottinghamshire and Derby Regiment. He sailed from Southampton to France on 14 January 1916 and returned back home on 26 September of the same year. He was redeployed on 16 August 1917, sailing from Southampton to Salonika (now Thessaloniki), arriving on 7th September. He was then attached to 20th Battalion Heavy Battery Royal Artillery on 25th September and promoted to Acting Corporal a year later on 29 August 1918. He was admitted to Salonika Hospital on 23 September 1918 with (suspected Spanish) influenza, by the 29 he was noted as having ‘mal response’ and by the 10 October was noted as ‘dangerously ill’. A week later, on the 17 October 1918 he died of phthisis and cardiac failure. His widow Mary received his possessions and a war pension.
