Biography
Flight Sergeant Navigator (Bomber) Cyril Baynton entered Borough Road College in 1938 and graduated in 1940. He joined the RAF upon graduation and joined the 70 Squadron. Flight Sergeant Baynton (then Sergeant Observer) became a local celebrity when in 1942 he survived a plane crash in Africa and he had to sleep in trees to avoid the wildlife. In 1943 he was less lucky when he was sent on a mission to bomb Turin. Due to the cloud cover many planes crashed including Flight Sergeant Baynton’s. There were no survivors among his crew of five.
