Biography

Second Lieutenant Ernest George Annely was the son of Edward George and Lydia Annely, and attended his local bible class before attending Borough Road College for two years. Whilst at the college he competed in tennis, acting as the tennis treasurer 1908-09, and graduated with Intermediate Art London qualification. He enlisted to the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment in 1915. He rose to Corporal and was later commissioned. Annely was 29 when he died on 3 May 1917, leaving a widow Julia Adeline Forsdike. ‘His company (D Company) were attacking the right of the village of Bullecourt near Arras as part of the 2/5 West Yorks. His company was held up in the front line although some got as far as the village church. His body was found in Bullecourt itself. The area was fought over again and his body has yet to be recovered but he is probably somewhere near the church.’
