Biography

Second Lieutenant Geoffrey Raymond Palmer was the son of James and Katherine Palmer, and was a member of his local Young Men’s Association before attending Borough Road College. He graduated the college with an Intermediate Science London. He is listed as being destined for a school in Battersea. He was a maths lecturer at Merchant Ventures School in connection with the University Bristol. Palmer enlisted in September 1914 in the Gloucestershire Regiment and subsequently commissioned into the 10th Battalion West Riding Regiment. He was 28 when he was killed by a grenade on 29 July 1916 while leading his men in a charge on his first day in action.
