Biography

Corporate Herbert John Fountain studied at Borough Road College for two years, graduating with Intermediate Arts qualification. He went on to gain a BA in 1914. In the annual reports he is listed as being destined for a school in Crouch Hill.  He joined the Honourable Artillery Company in January 1916 and initially served in France until he was re-posted to Italy in November 1917.  He was wounded on 26 October 1918 at the battle of Vittorio Vento and returned to the UK in December 1918 to the military hospital in Endell Street.  He was discharged to his parents’ home in Willesden in June 1919, but eventually died from his wounds on 16 January 1920, aged 26.  He left his wife Dorothy and daughter Irene.
