Biography

Second Lieutenant Joseph Armstrong was the son of George and Mary Armstrong and attended Borough Road College for two years. At the college he excelled in sciences and teaching and also represented Borough Road College at rugby, acting as the rugby secretary 1908-09. Armstrong enlisted in Kendal, Westmorland on 1 April 1915 into the 5th Battalion Border Regiment. He rose to Corporal and was later commissioned. Annely was 30 when he died on 22 March 1918, leaving a widow Mary Armstrong.
