Biography

Second Lieutenant Sydney Robert Mitchley was born in King’s Lynn to Robert and Hannah Mitchley. He attended Borough Road College for two years where he showed distinction in Mathematics as well as sport. Mitchley was a prefect whilst at the college and was the tennis club captain from 1909-10. He enlisted on the 1 September 1914 When war broke out he enlisted into the London Irish Rifles, and was commissioned into the 10th Battalion Norfolk Regiment on 7 March 1916. Mitchley then married Elizabeth on 16 March and in August 1916 he was posted with the 7th Battalion Norfolk Regiment to the Western Front. On the morning of 12 October 1916 he was wounded but remained in action. Later that day he was killed whilst leading his platoon in an attack near Flers, Somme.
