Biography

Sergeant William Ronald Wharmby entered Borough Road College in 1940 and was called up to the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1941. On the 14th on July 1944 Sergeant Wharmby and six other men set off for a supply drop. However the crew crashed in the Pyrenees near Pic-de-Douly. Sergeant Wharmby and the others are buried at Pic-de-Douly Isolated Burial Ground and remembered at Haut Nistos Communal Cemetery. There is a remembrance plaque at the site of the crash.
