Revision Strategies

Practice Active Reading - Write down what you know about the topic, then make a list of what you need to know more about (theories, methods, etc.) and then keep an eye out for these in your reading

More thinking, less notes - Read a passage, stop and think about what you've read and then make notes. Thinking and reflecting makes understanding.

Try not to cram! - Cramming in lots of revision in a short amount of time can be overwhelming and you may not process the information.

Teach - Explaining subject material to your peers helps to consolidate your learning

Organise your study space - Is there sufficient light and space? Is your phone on do not disturb? Make sure you're as comfortable as possible to ensure focus.

Look at Past Papers - Past paers are not held with the Library but are often available in BrightSpace, speak to your tutor for more information.

Dealing with Exam Stress

  • Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water
  • Make sure you get plenty of rest and sleep
  • Make a schedule for your revision time
  • Reward yourself for studying

Time Management

Be realistic! - Don't make a schedule that's too inflexible, as you're less likely to follow it. If you know you're not an early bird, don't schedule your revision to start at 7am, as it will be hard to stick with.

Set long and short-term rewards - After a certain amount of study, treat yourself to a coffee break, chat with a friend, go to the gym, play a game, eat a cake (in moderation) and keep your long-term reward in mind - to do as well as you deserve in the exam by being properly prepared.

Achievable goals  - Have a to do list and tick off what you've completed as you go along to keep you motivated

Alert times  - Pick the times of day when you're most alert to do your revision, not everyone is the same!

Time on/time off - Try studying for 50 minutes, then take a 5-minute break so you don't overload yourself.

Be flexible - Don't worry if you wake up late! Adjust your plans rather than writing your day off.
